Chronicles of a Mean Boss: Writing a Development Plan

October 7th 2008 00:35
Having an underperforming employee can be a challenge and a good way to deal with it is with a development plan. Give the person a 30 or 60-day plan that essentially spells out what items need to be accomplished during that period. Make sure it is spelled out clearly and can be easily measured. If you have any level of vagueness in the plan, you give your employee an out. Also identify the time constraints as to when each one should be completed.

Help them achieve success with your organization or give them the nudge they need to leave. Look at this as one more tool to coaching your employees but use it as a last result for those that can’t just aren’t getting it.
