Should I Pursue This Job?

I am constantly asked advice about job searches, interviewing and other career stuff. Today, I had a question from a relative. She interviewed for a job a couple of weeks ago. They mentioned something about the job being paid hourly and she was immediately turned off. She was a salaried employee at her current company and felt like that would be a step back.
After the interview, she did not send a thank you note and did not complete the application that they had asked for. Now they are contacting her and asking for that application and additional information. She wanted to know what she should do.
My question back to her was whether or not this was a place she would want to work if it was a salaried position. She thought about it and said maybe she would like it. Ok, what to do now. My advice in this case was to call them back and tell the truth. It puts the ball back in their court if she calls and says that she isn’t interested because she does not want a job that is paid hourly (non-exempt). This gives them a couple of choices then if she is someone they would like working for them. They could see if there is a way to change the position to salaried or they could consider her for another position there that is salaried.
One this I have learned over the years is that it never hurts to ask. Don’t leave that employer hanging either because they may have something perfect for you that hadn’t been considered earlier.
