Getting the Job You Want

June 12th 2008 11:55
Is there any secret to getting the job you really want? Well sure, you have to be perfect and meet the expectations of the potential employer! Ok besides that, here are a few tips that I have learned over the years to help me get jobs that I wanted.

1. Be positive. When you are negative, a potential employer isn’t going to be too enthusiastic about you. They don’t want to hear you constantly putting yourself or others down. They also don’t want to hear you blaming all of your past problems or mistakes on others.
2. Dress the part. I mentioned this in an earlier post. It is really, really, really important that you dress like you want the job.

3. Prepare in advance. I cannot believe how many people I have interviewed in the past that knew absolutely nothing about the company (or me) when they came in. I have even interviewed people that knew very little (mostly assumptions) about the job. With the Internet today, there is just no excuse…do your homework.
4. Practice, practice, practice. If you haven’t done this yet, start practicing your answers to potential interview questions (this sounds like an idea for a future post). I have had many people over the years asking me for help thinking about questions they may be asked and how to answer them. Put yourself in the interviewers chair to think of some ideas.
5. Don’t be nervous. I know, you really want this job. How can you not be nervous? The truth is, though, you are going to blow it, if your whole body is shaking while you are walking in there or trying to talk. Take a few calming breaths before the interview gets started and do that again at various points when you are starting to feel nervous again. You can do it.

Hey, keep in mind that there may be times when you don’t get the job, no matter how great your interview was. This has happened to me. Sometimes there is an internal candidate that is well liked that is hired instead. While I can’t prove it, I am fairly sure that I was declined other opportunities because of my age (too young). It’s disappointing, but it does happen, so keep moving forward. There is a job out there for you somewhere.

Totally agreed with your thoughts here, Jen.

One more thing, most of the employers love those employees that always keep themselves updating to the latest news/stuffs, that related to their profession.

For those workers that lazy to recharge themselves with the acquired knowledge, the risk of getting fired is awaiting them for sure...
