Should You Go Back to College?
June 17th 2008 02:08
No matter what your age, there are still many benefits to going to school. If you never earned a college degree, it’s always a good time to go back. If you have a degree and want an advanced degree, that’s even better. That college degree or advanced degree can mean increasing your overall earning potential. It can also mean to difference between going to a job everyday that you hate and maybe find something a lot more interesting.
I hear from a lot of people that they are afraid to go back to college as an adult because they don’t want to be stuck hanging out with a bunch of 20-year old kids. The truth of the matter is that adults are becoming a large portion of college enrollments these days. Depending on your major, you may find that there are more students just like you than the young kids.
Another common reason most people don’t want to go back to school is that they are afraid they won’t do well or think they will have trouble remembering the material. Guess what? Adult students have a tendency to be more successful in their classes than those young kids. This is because adults tend to be more motivated to get their degree and move on. Colleges love adult students because they don’t mess around and don’t have time to fail. Ok, I am generalizing here because I have known adult college students that didn’t do as well, but that’s because they didn’t put the effort into it.
Whatever your anxiety, there are that many reasons why you should go back to college. In times like these when the economy is suffering, the person with the college degree (especially an advanced degree) is more likely to remain employed or found new employment. Whatever is holding you back, think about whether or not it really is a good enough reason.
