Insubordination – Are You Kidding Me?
July 23rd 2008 02:27
As a manager I know I have high expectations. I also know that the standards I set for my staff are not unrealistic. When I see other areas in my corporation that are able to meet similar standards are know that it is possible.
I inherited a number of employees that were used to having little expected of them. It was a cushy job where they could do very little and get away with it. It was an embarrassment to other areas of the corporation, but they didn’t see it that way – of course. Now I come in and expect them to actually do work.
I have set new standards for my staff. They whine and moan about how they can’t do the work without overtime. The real issue is that they do not know how to manage their time. Today in a meeting with other departments, I actually had one of them publicly question my decision.
Are you kidding me?!?!?!
Of course, these people were allowed to get away with insubordination by their previous boss. They were also allowed to get away with low productivity and poor customer service. Oh and before I forget, they were rude to everyone around them. One employee told other employees that they were not allowed to call her and if they did she called them names.
On the good side, I love dealing with problems like this. While I don’t enjoy conflict, I do enjoy fixing problems and that is exactly what I am doing. I have set the expectation for these people and am following through. They now know that they are accountable for their performance. That’s the only way to fix the problem or encourage them to leave.
