Laid Off - Now What?
April 29th 2009 18:22
"We regret to inform you that because of the current economic situation your services will be terminated effective immediately. We will contact you directly should this situation change, but we don't expect to rehire in the near future."
Boom.
No matter how prepared you think you are - how much you've discussed the rumors, how much you've noticed that the boss won't look you in the eye - it's still a shock to get laid off.
What happens next varies greatly. Some get angry, some get sad, some get lazy. We all know that we should get up the following morning, shine our shoes, and boldly go forth into the job market.
What's more likely is to pull on our sweats and watch TV or play video games.
Don't be too hard on yourself. A little time for sadness is OK. Here's my first job hunter tip:
1) Do at least one thing every single day to move your job search forward.
Even if it's a small thing, it's important to work a little every day.
What's a good starting point?
Make a one-page Job Hunter Plan.
This will be explained in the next posting.
