Surprise, It’s Your Performance Evaluation
September 30th 2008 02:13
So you’re getting your performance evaluation and surprise, there are things in there that you had no idea where a problem. What do you do? Should you counter what your boss has said? Will that be career limiting?
Think very carefully before taking action and consider the consequences. If it was a terrible evaluation anyway, your career has already been limited so you don’t have much to lose. However, if it was a decent evaluation but you consider yourself to be an excellent or above average employee, think about it. Did you boss tell you any details during the initial meeting? If yes, then think about it. Admittedly, many people are terrible when it comes to the performance evaluation but don’t get defensive at this point (unless you are paranoid delusional or really do have a boss out to get you).
Responding to a poor or average performance evaluation makes you appear defensive, uncooperative and potentially out of touch with reality. On the other hand, if an evaluation is truly not representative of the work you have done, you are hurting yourself by not writing a response.
A word to the wise, don’t copy your rebuttal to your boss’s supervisor. That really looks bad since you aren’t following the chain of command. It may on the other hand, give them both a good laugh which is also bad for you!
