Are You Promotable?

Have you ever been passed up for a promotion or career opportunity that you felt you deserved? Did your boss tell you that you weren’t promotable? Ever wonder what exactly it means to be “promotable?”
When I look at employees that report to me, I carefully consider each on to determine if they have the characteristics that I think are important to help them succeed in the organization. I expect that the person is supportive of the company. There is no way I would promote some way that is bad mouthing me, my boss or the organization in general. I am always amazed when someone applies for a promotion but has an attitude problem. Like they really think that they have a chance at the promotion.
Ok, so other characteristics that you need to be promotable include being capable to lead and an effective communicator. For many people, there is a charisma that makes it instantly apparent that the person will go far.
When I started my most recent position, I met someone that I felt had potential. This is almost as good as being promotable. I just needed to get him out of his shell. He was overshadowed by other employees that had been there longer than he had and he lacked the confidence to show his leadership qualities.
As the leader for the department, I saw it as my job to build the skills of my employees. I want all A players working for me so that means that I need to make sure they have the confidence to do their jobs. When I recognize that someone is promotable, I will work with them to get them in an advanced position. On the other hand, being told that you are not promotable is the “kiss of death” at work.
