Management Lessons: Who’s In Charge?
July 1st 2008 18:50
You know, I don’t like working with managers that do not have the skills to manage or lead their people. When there are problems and the boss doesn’t feel like they can tell the employees that they are messing up, it just creates bigger issues. Staff members start to feel like nothing they do will ever get them in trouble and they go down that road of not caring and taking no responsibility for their work.
What is even worse is when a manager recognized the deficiencies in their employees but won’t address it because they are afraid of not being liked. I have news for you. If your employees are behaving poorly, they probably don’t have a lot of respect for you. On top of that, your peers won’t have a lot of respect for you either. Being a manager is not putting you into a popularity contest. Let’s face it, you don’t need to be friends with your subordinates and, in reality, you should not try to be their friend.
So managers if you need some classes on how to lead your folks, you should do that. A manager that cannot see beyond trying to be everyone’s friend is not going to get very far at work and probably won’t see a promotion in their future. You need to be able to deal with issues and provide your staff with appropriate direction. Don’t let your staff lead you around by the nose.
