Being a Working Mother
September 5th 2008 00:28
How is it that you can work a full-time job and still be a mother? I hear that from people all the time. Sometimes I hear from people how impressed and amazed they are that I can work (in a high pressure job) and still maintain my family life. My husband and I are still married—another shock for many people – and he’s a stay-at-home father.
How does any woman do this? This is a question that I consider a little patronizing since you don’t hear men being asked this question. I think it makes me even better as a mother to my children and as an employee. I am incredibly skilled at multi-tasking and time management. It has also helped me to become efficient and very self-disciplined. I am not trying to pat myself on the back because I know of a lot of working women that are equally competent. You gain these skills by balancing home and work.
Does it make us any less as women and mothers to work outside the home? Definitely not! I think it makes us better role models for our children.
In no way do I mean to imply that mothers (or fathers) that choose to stay at home are less than those that choose to work. I think we all have to make the choices that work for us and our families.
